USPA NEWS - The risk of wildfires has decreased in several areas of Nova Scotia, prompting the province to lift wood restrictions in certain counties as of 4 p.m. today, August 29th. However, the provincewide burn ban remains in effect until October 15th or until conditions improve further.
The fine for violating the restrictions is $25,000.
According to Premier Tim Houston, the decision was made after fire officials assessed updated data. "Our data reveals that conditions are trending positively in specific parts of the province, warranting the professionals' recommendation to lift wood restrictions in those areas. Meanwhile, crews continue to combat the fire in Long Lake, and public vigilance has contributed to minimal wildfire activity elsewhere."
Woods restrictions have been lifted in Cape Breton, Richmond, Victoria, Inverness, Guysborough, Antigonish, and Halifax counties.
Other parts of the province remain under restrictions due to extremely dry and hazardous conditions. These include Pictou, Colchester, Cumberland, Hants, Lunenburg, Kings, Annapolis, Queens, Shelburne, Digby, and Yarmouth counties. The restrictions in these 11 counties will stay in place until October 15th or until conditions allow for them to be lifted.
As of August 29th, the Long Lake wildfires complex remains out of control, with an estimated area of 8234 hectares affected. There have been no reports of new damage. In the future, daily updates will be released, unless a significant development in the fire demands more frequent communication.
